There's a new member of the family

Let's make it a happy time!

Ellie's Legacy in Action

Whether it's introducing a new feline or a new canine it can be stressful.

Patience is most important.  That new four legged friend needs to get familiar with sights and smells of its new home.  Start with a small area and introduce other family members a little at a time.  Avoid overwhelming current of newcomers to the home.

What about vetting?

Even indoor only animals are susceptible to viruses so vaccinations are necessary to avoid future illnesses.    Hopefully wherever you get your newbie they have already taken care of that.  Make sure you get paperwork to confirm the medications received.

Pudgy tummies are so cute, but could be a sign that you're newbie needs to be dewormed.  Especially if there are loose stools that accompany it.  There are over the counter medications for this, but be sure to check with your vet.

Let's talk about microchips

There are a number of microchip products.   They are all registered a common data base, but it is up to the owner to register their pet. I can't tell you how many times an animal is found and when they are scanned there is no information.   Please get Fluffy microchipped ... more importantly make sure YOUR information is registered on your pet.

Those cat claws

There are so many reasons and so many other options to removing a cat's claws.  First and foremost it is painful and frequently causes additional problems.  Imagine having your fingers broken and removed at the knuckle of your hands.  Just because its more convenient for your roommates.  Please do not declaw your cat.

There are alternatives to getting scratched by those sharp little tips.  A great option is nail caps.  Its a little tricky to get the hang of putting them on.  You can also have your vet or groomer put them on.  Them replacing them won't be quite a challenge.  Many people just prefer to clip their cat's nails occasionally.  The most you trim their nails, the easier it will get.
